Photo of the week: rainbow favela in Rio

Rainbow favela in rio

Rainbow favela

We took this photo from the cable car that runs across Alemao, one of Rio’s biggest favelas.  We went to the favela for lunch with a girl we were couchsurfing with, and had some awesome vegetarian feijoada at Isabel’s cafe. Seeing the favela from above was fascinating, but most of all we enjoyed meeting some of Alemao’s residents and interviewing them for our blog If I had a Superpower. A trick of the light created the beautiful rainbow colours in the corner. Here’s one of the interviews we did while there.

Interview with Isabel from Alemao

Isabel, 43, lives with her husband and two daughters in Alemão, a complex of favelas in Rio de Janeiro. We asked Isabel our questions after eating rice and beans at her cafe in the favela.

What’s your greatest love?

Sundays are my greatest love. I have to work a lot so Sundays are perfect. I like to go to the beach with my daughter.

Describe your perfect day

I would have enough money to travel to different places. It would be great.

Where is your favourite place you’ve travelled to?

To Rio Natal, but I’d like to go everywhere. Disneyland would be my first stop. People say a lot of good things about Disneyland.

When were you happiest?

I am happiest when I can work and I have my health and disposition.

If you had a superpower, what would it be?

I would have the power to change the minds of the Government. They always put money into the wrong things. I would put money into education and health. There are so many children without parents, and who have bad health.

If you could have dinner with three people, dead or alive, who would they be?

My mum who isn’t here anymore, my older daughter who doesn’t live in Alemão, and my husband.
