Bread and Roses Café

By B&B | September 18, 2007

So I’m finally going to post an entry on food today. Wow, it’s been a while!

Amy and I got together for lunch a few days ago at Bread and Roses, which is this charming little place right outside the Luxembourg Gardens in that wonderfully quiet neighborhood that is not facing Blvd St. Michel. *shudders in horror* I’ve always meant to try this deli-café because they’re known for their organic breads and fresh veggies but I guess I had better uses for my money. (Hint, this means it’s not cheap to eat here!)

But when Amy suggested we get together, I thought it was high time for me to actually go out, sit down to a proper meal, and socialize like a normal Parisian human being instead of grabbing stuff on the go or worse yet, sit in my apartment and gorge on Cocoa Puffs while watching Germany’s Next Top Model. In the dark. Alone. And laughing hysterically. To myself.

So what did we order? I was stupid enough to forget that “chèvre” meant “goat” and only zoned in on the “des tomates séchées” which made me hyperventilate because I’ve not had a good sun-dried tomato anything in so long that the mere idea of being able to eat it sent me over the roof with excitment. (Okay, I wasn’t that excited but then again, I kind of was). The dish came with large round chunks of goat cheese on a huge slice of toasted bread with a massive salad on the side. But because I cannot digest cheese (this is where the “chèvre” mistake plays in), I only finished the salade and then switched with Amy who was kind enough to share her grub with me. Literally, grub!

I don’t remember what it was called so I’ll just call it “fish grub” or perchance, la tambouille du poisson? It was essentially fish bits grounded up into a fishy dip that kind of tasted like shrimp paste. It was actually pretty good but it’s the kind of thing that can only be eaten in very small amounts. And it was very salty. And it left a very long-lasting aftertaste in my mouth. I actually had a dentist appointment later that day so thank goodness I had brought my toothbrush and mouthwash with me in anticipation.*

*footnote: Stop giggling because it SO IS NOT weird to bring dental hygiene stuff around with you the day of an appointment. How gross would it be to go into the dentist’s office with an unbrushed mouth? Especially if your dentist is too hot for words? Back me up on this reasoning, someone!

Hee! I was going to blog this today, but you beat me to it… The pink stuff is called tarama, by the way, and it’s made from fish roe.

HAHA! Yes! Tarama! I tried to google “tamara” and “fish” but only came up with “Tamaron fish-eye camera lenses.” Thanks!

Btw, I think the fish we caught when I was a kid is called “blue fish.” The meat is kind of tough and the bones have a bluish hue. Not my favorite fish but it’s what we fishermen ate. ;-)

OK, now that first salad up there — the one with the goat cheese and the sun-dried tomatoes?! — now THAT looks too good for words! And of course it helps even more that your photo of it is so fab, too! I’m a big fan of sundried tomatoes, so anytime I see them in a sandwich or a salad, I just HAVE to have them…

So when do I get to go to this place?! Amy, dear, can you hear me? ;o) I think I’ve heard of Bread and Roses before, I just never had a chance to go. I seriously don’t get to spend enough time on the Left Bank…

P.S. - I’m sorry you couldn’t digest the cheese!! I understand where you’re coming from, because I’ve been having some digestive difficulties myself lately — oops, TMI! Sorry about that…
