A year on the road in photos…

Live the life you've imagined

It’s 365 days since we stepped out of our empty London home onto the early morning streets of Peckham and made our way to Rio. Twelve months and twelve countries later, we’re in Mexico with no intention of stopping our travels. It’s been an epic year and, short of reading the blog in its entirety, I think the best way to tell it is in photos… Read more

Walking on the moon and mars in San Pedro de Atacama

Valle de la Luna, San Pedro de Atacama tour

San Pedro de Atacama is surrounded by surreal, other-worldy landscapes. In one direction, you can head towards Bolivia’s salt flats and a land of coloured lagoons and striped volcanoes. Travel to Argentina and you’ll pass a mountain of seven colours – or step just outside the town and you’ll find yourself in the Valle de la Luna, named as such because it’s said to look like the moon. Top 15 South America highlights: our year in pictures

Excellent splendour salt flatsThis time last year, our journey was still a dream. I had another couple of months at work, we needed to find tenants for our house and the number 2012 was still synonymous with the Olympics. Now, twelve months later, that number has come to symbolize the year the dream came true.

Choosing to travel was a massive ingredient that helped make 2012 one of the best years of our lives. In our next post, we’ll look at what else helped create that, but today we wanted to celebrate our travel highlights from the past 12 months.

During that time, we’ve been to six countries in South America, as well as separate trips to India, Europe and the US, and now Mexico (which you’ll be hearing a lot more about soon as we’ve fallen for it head over heels). Dusty streets of San Pedro de Atacama

There was something familiar about San Pedro de Atacama from the moment we arrived. We struggled to put our fingers on it until suddenly it became clear: the oasis in the middle of the desert was a little like being at Glastonbury festival in the UK. Here’s why: Read more

Photo of the week: mega galaxy above San Pedro de Atacama

Galaxy above San Pedro

We journeyed to San Pedro de Atacama partly in search of its promised cosmic vistas of our local neighbourhood galaxy. One night we took a guided ‘star tour’ out of the town to gaze through a dozen telescopes( ranging from the modest to the elaborate) at star clusters, nebulae, breathtakingly bright binary stars and saturn, rings and all. We set the camera on the ground and left it for the longest possible exposure to capture this picture of the Milky Way above us. This is our home.

When fears become fun: sandboarding in San Pedro de Atacama

Climbing the dune while sandboarding in San Pedro de Atacama

Sandboarding in San Pedro de Atacama is one of the most popular activities in Chile’s oasis in the desert. I wasn’t keen – my co-ordination is abysmal and I’ve never done anything like it before, but when the lady in the tour shop asked “why don’t you want to do it? It’s fun,” I had no good answer. So the next day I found myself, sandboard in hand, heading into the desert. Read more
